New research from four independent international laboratories in Ireland, Italy, France and the Netherlands, has supported the homoeopathic idea that effects can occur below the level at which any molecule of the substance is present by using histamine dilutions on basophil activation.
High dilutions of histamine influence the activation of human basophils measured by alcian blue staining. The degree of inhibition depends on the initial level of anti-IgE induced stimulation, with the greatest inhibitory effects seen at lower levels of stimulation. This multicentre study was confirmed in the three laboratories by using flow cytometry and in one lab by using histamine release.
In three different types of experiments it was thus shown that high dilutions of histamine can indeed exert an effect on basophil activity. It confirms the basic findings that Dr Jacques Beneveniste published in Nature in 1988, which caused such an outcry and led to such controversy in the scientific community.
However, the authors concluded that they were unable to explain their findings and encourage others to investigate the phenomena. For full details, see: Belon P, Cumps J et al. ‘Histamine dilutions modulate basophil activation’, Inflammation Research 2004;53:181-8.
