"The US RDA committee has tried to dismiss studies of high dose ascorbate [Vitamin C] by asserting that the dose is pharmacological; this claim needs to be demonstrated, however. Ascorbate kills cancer cells and leaves normal cells unharmed. Some scientists believe that atherosclerosis, heart disease and stroke are a result of chronically inadequate ascorbate intake, which needs to be at gram levels in susceptible individuals. There have been multiple observations of benefit in shock, infection, arthritis and other degenerative diseases. In the face of this evidence and the absence of demonstrable toxicity, the committee is taking a great risk by limiting daily intake to levels that prevent acute scurvy. While the RDA committees may believe their recommendations to be conservative, the cost-benefit analysis reveals them to be foolhardy to the point of recklessness. -- Steve Hickey and Hilary Roberts, The Ridiculous Dietary Allowance, Pg. 82-83
